This is one of a suite of pieces which
Phil Robson wrote in response to a Derby Jazz commission for Derby
Jazz Week 2007. Phil also created this new ensemble to realise the
work which he subsequently released on Babel Records and
toured around the UK.
".... the sensation
was Phil Robson's Six Strings and the Beat project...This inspired
crossover is a real achievement for Robson and should go down
among the year's jazz landmarks." JOHN FORDHAM -

Derby Jazz celebrated its 25th anniversary by curating Derby
Jazz Week in March 2007. This piece, written and conducted by renowned
jazz composer Graham Collier, was commissioned by Derby Jazz for the East Midlands Youth Jazz
Orchestra (now renamed Hot House Big Band) to play with guests Harry Beckett and
John Bailey.
The above video, also recorded during Derby Jazz Week 2007, features
world-class saxophonist Julian Siegel playing with the John Bailey
Band. This collaboration was initiated and funded by Rhythm-A-Ning,
an EMJAZZ regional artist development project.
Derby Jazz commissioned this music from pianist John Bailey to
celebrate the 275th anniversary of the birth of painter Joseph
Wright of Derby in 2009. The inaugural performance took place
in Derby Art Gallery in the presence of the world's largest
collection of works by Joseph Wright.
